Oct 26, 2012 - Oct 28, 2012
Martinsburg, West Virginia
We will be offering an NRA Pistol Instructor Course on the above date. This course will include the mandatory NRA Basic Instructor Training (BIT) course, which will be held on Friday afternoon-evening. If you are an NRA Instructor, you do not need to attend the Friday BIT session if you have taken BIT within the last 24 months.
The purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to be able to teach the NRA Basic Pistol or NRA Pistol First Steps courses.
This is an instructor course, not a basic skills course. You must have experience in pistol shooting prior to taking this course. You will be sent a pre-course test when you register. You must pass this test with a score of 90% or higher. There will be a practical skills test as part of the class.
This course will take place at 4625 Winchester Ave in Martinsburg, WV 25405. This course is a minimum of 20 hours (6 for BIT and 14 for Pistol). For new instructors, class starts Friday evening at 5:00 pm. For current instructors, Pistol Instructor portion of the course will start Saturday morning and complete Sunday evening. Estimated times are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Saturday, and 9:00 am to 3:00 pm on Sunday. (Exact times subject to change.) If you are an instructor but have not added a new discipline within the last 24 months, you are considered a new instructor for this class; i.e. you must attend Friday evening’s Basic Instructor Training class.
For those of you who wish to stay in Martinsburg Friday or Saturday evening, we have arranged for a group of rooms at the Comfort Inn Aikens Center. Ask for the Virginia Gun Safety group rate. (You must call the hotel directly to make your reservation using this group discount.)
Your course fee includes all course materials, firearms, ammunition, and facility fees. It does not include certification fees paid to the NRA (which average $25).
You are welcome to bring your own shooting aids – eye and ear protection, and personal handguns for use during the pre-course live fire assessment, class and range sessions. If you bring your own firearms, you must provide your own commercial ammunition (50-100 rounds). No reloads, tracers, or armor piercing ammunition is allowed.
Course fee is $350. Fee includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. Members of youth groups such as the Boy Scouts of America, 4-H, etc., receive a discount. The registration form is below. Once you complete the form, you will be taken to our payment page. Please pay just the deposit. We will invoice you the balance once we verify your youth group association, if any. We prefer PayPal, but you can send us a check if you do not want to use PayPal. If paying by check, please understand that your spot is not guaranteed until payment is received.
This course is limited to twelve students.
No live ammunition will be allowed in the classroom, or at the range while not specifically on the firing line. This includes concealed handgun permit holders and local, state, or federal law enforcement officers – except in the proper execution of their duties.
SPACE IS LIMITED, SO SIGN UP EARLY! Any questions, please use the form on the Contacts page.

The NRA Training Counselor who conducts your course will make a recommendation to NRA concerning your certification based on an evaluation of your knowledge, skill, and attitude. You will be expected to demonstrate your organizational and teaching skills through participation in several practical exercises during the course of your training. You will also be required to complete an instructor certification examination. A minimum score of 90 percent is required for certified instructor applicants (85 percent for assistant and apprentice instructor applicants). Attendance at the course, or a passing grade on the examination, does not guarantee that you will receive the recommendation of the NRA Training Counselor.
Instructor certification involves a commitment to conduct NRA Basic Firearms Training Courses on an annual basis in each discipline group (rifle, pistol, shotgun) in which you hold instructor ratings. NRA instructor ratings are valid for one year. Renewal of your certification will be contingent upon your annual activity in conducting NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses, and your participation in periodic re-certification activities.
Candidates hereby expressly assume the risk of taking part in the course for instruction in firearms, and taking part in the activities, which include, but are not limited to, instruction in the use of firearms, the discharge of firearms and the firing of live ammunition. Candidates hereby expressly acknowledge that they are legally capable of the acquisition, possession, transfer and use of firearms in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of West Virginia, as regulated by federal, state and local laws and regulations. False notification or misrepresentation to legally possess firearms in the Commonwealth or the State will result in student’s immediate removal from class and forfeiture of all course fees.
