Jul 13, 2012 - Jul 15, 2012
Markham, VA
We will be offering an NRA Rifle Instructor Course on the above date for adult members of the Scouting community. This course will include the mandatory NRA Basic Instructor Training (BITS) course. (This course is open to the general public as well, but priority is given to youth group organizations.)
The purpose of this course is to train adult leaders to be able to teach the NRA Basic Rifle or NRA Rifle First Steps courses or the BSA Rifle Merit Badge; which will also allow you to run or assist in running a rifle event at the Unit, District, or Council level.
This is an instructor course, not a basic skills course. You must have experience in rifle shooting prior to taking this course. You will be sent a pre-course test when you register. You must pass this test with a score of 80% or higher. There will be a practical skills test Friday evening prior to the start of the class.
This course will take place at Camp Big Mac, Markham, VA. Course will start Friday evening and complete Sunday. Because this course is a minimum of 21 hours (6 for BITS and 14 for Rifle) it is required that you stay the entire weekend. Class starts at 5pm on Friday evening.
Camp Big Mac is a youth camp run by the Claude MacDonald Foundation, and we use the camp frequently for training. The camp has several bunk house style cabins or you may tent camp. Running (potable) water, electricity, kitchen, and modern toilet facilities are available.
Your course fee includes all course materials, ammunition, facility fees, and food. It does not include certification fees paid to the NRA (which average $25). In the spirit of Scouting, we ask that everyone pitch in to cook and clean. (Think of this as an adult Scout campout.)
You are welcome to bring your own shooting aids – eye and ear protection, and personal rifle (.22LR rifles only) for use during class and range sessions. For those who do not own any .22LR rifles we will provide them for class and range time.
Course fee is $175 for youth group members, $250 for the general public. Fee includes a $50 non-refundable deposit. The registration form is below. Once you complete the form, you will be taken to our payment page. Please pay just the deposit. We will invoice you the balance once we verify your youth group association. We prefer PayPal, but you can send us a check if you do not want to use PayPal. If paying by check, please understand that your spot is not guaranteed until payment is received.
This course is limited to 9 students. Priority will be given to members of the Scouting community, and others working with youth groups.
No live ammunition will be allowed in the classroom, or at the range while not specifically on the firing line. This includes concealed handgun permit holders and local, state, or federal law enforcement officers – except in the proper execution of their duties.
SPACE IS LIMITED, SO SIGN UP EARLY! Any questions, please use the form on the Contacts page.

Instructor Candidates must be 21 years old or older. Assistant Instructor Candidates must be 18 to 21 years old. Apprentice Instructor Candidates must be 13 to 17 years old. Anyone under 21 years old must contact registration@vagunsafety.com prior to registering.
The NRA Training Counselor who conducts your course will make a recommendation to NRA concerning your certification based on an evaluation of your knowledge, skill, and attitude. You will be expected to demonstrate your organizational and teaching skills through participation in several practical exercises during the course of your training. You will also be required to complete an instructor certification examination. A minimum score of 90 percent is required for certified instructor applicants (85 percent for assistant and apprentice instructor applicants). Attendance at the course, or a passing grade on the examination, does not guarantee that you will receive the recommendation of the NRA Training Counselor.
Instructor certification involves a commitment to conduct NRA Basic Firearms Training Courses (or Boy Scout Rifle or Shotgun Merit Badge courses) on an annual basis in each discipline group (rifle, pistol, shotgun) in which you hold instructor ratings. NRA instructor ratings are valid for one year. Renewal of your certification will be contingent upon your annual activity in conducting NRA Basic Firearm Training Courses, and your participation in periodic re-certification activities.
Candidates hereby expressly assume the risk of taking part in the course for instruction in firearms, and taking part in the activities, which include, but are not limited to, instruction in the use of firearms, the discharge of firearms and the firing of live ammunition. Candidates hereby expressly acknowledge that they are legally capable of the acquisition, possession, transfer and use of firearms in the Commonwealth of Virginia, as regulated by federal, state and local laws and regulations. False notification or misrepresentation to legally possess firearms in the Commonwealth will result in student’s immediate removal from class and forfeiture of all course fees.
