Happenings Basic Classes Instructor's Corner Tip of the Month! What's Up Ahead

Virginia Gun Safety Newsletter for January-February 2012

Happenings
———————————————–
The biggest news here at VGS is the fact that our Basic Pistol courses are booked well into the August class! We’re all amazed. We will be working on trying to fit a few more into the schedule.

We want to remind all our alumni that we are available for individual continuing training. While both the NRA and VGS are developing dedicated concealed carry courses that can be conducted at most commercial indoor ranges, we can work with you individually at the range to improve your shooting techniques and give you the foundation to take advanced training.

We’ve spent a good portion of this first quarter conducting the NRA Personal Protection series courses for some of our instructor alumni. We’ve got most of the kinks worked out of the course deliveries, so we hope to be offering it to the general public soon.

We started using a new newsletter engine this month. For those of you who received the test last month, this is a different service than the one we tested. So if you see messages from us delivered by MailChimp, its from our new newsletter engine.

On a personal note, Tony’s shoulder surgery went well. Three anchors in his shoulder. He’s about seven weeks post-surgery, and about four weeks into physical therapy. His doctor and therapists say his recovery is going very well.

Basic Classes
———————————————–
We have six Basic Pistol classes remaining on the schedule for 2012. We are booked thru the August delivery. We hope to get a few more added to meet the growing demand. If you are an instructor alumni, contact us if you want to assist with deliveries.

Tip of the Month!
For those of you who are firearms instructors, you should give the following a read: Liability Insurance and the Regulation of Firearms (http://lsr.nellco.org/uconn_wps/60/). We recommend that anyone who teaches firearm safety and shooting skills 1) be a certified firearms instructor; and 2) carry firearms instructor insurance. This applies even to those in the Boy Scout community. Wether you are a uniformed Scouter or not, carry your own insurance policy.

So, its been just over two weeks since my surgery, and everyone who told me post-op would be painful were not lying. The first week was pretty rough. But things quickly stabilized to a manageable level. They gave me a nerve block when I went under, so that they only had to do light anesthesia. Looking at my arm and fingers once I woke up was weird. I would think “move” and the arm would just sit there. Very weird looking at a limb that would not respond to your commands. That wore off in the first 24 hours though, and then the shoulder pain was very noticeable. I’m back to my regular day job, though I still am not allowed to drive. Never mind trying to demonstrate how to draw from a holster. We ran a PPITH Instructor course last weekend, and it was the first time I’ve ever carried on my left hip. That was a strange feeling. Next week I start physical therapy. I’ll get a full (and I’m sure torturous) assessment of my current state and a slew of torture routines, I mean exercises, to work on to get my arm back to where its supposed [...]

I thought it was just ‘sprained.’ Well, early December my wife made me go see the doctor. He took one – brief – look at the X-rays and said “Its not a matter of if, but when and how extensive…” surgery would be. A week or so later and the MRI’s revealed that I have a SLAP tear in my shoulder. Given the Christmas holiday was almost here, surgery was scheduled for January 3rd. So now I’m in final countdown mode. No driving for three weeks. Arm/shoulder will be immobilized for three weeks minimum. Doctor says I’ll need three anchors. Of course he’ll know more once he gets in there. Good news is the surgery is arthroscopic, so recovery should be quicker than full open surgery. Down side is everyone tells me recovery is painful. I’m hoping they are lying Then I get to start physical therapy. The sad part for me is that its going to really cramp my training deliveries.
